patrick is finally moving from his beautiful barn in the eucalyptus grove to the little duplex he bought years ago as an investment property. g insisted on leaving the old appliances behind, so he dutifully went out and bought new ones, an enormous expense i had no right to question, but did anyway.
i look at it like this, he said. twenty years from now, i'll be ninety one and failing, and so will the washer. by then, it really won't matter if either of us work.
