at the risk of sounding like a sally field acceptance speech; i am always suprised to discover that people like me. yesterday, a birthday i tried to keep to myself suddenly evolved into an extraordinary display of affection. balloons and a teddy bear from a housekeeper who scarcely speaks english. flowers from the company i work for. roses and a rustic wire eiffel tower from patrick. cheesecake from berries, purchased with her own money. a call from my oldest friend in the world, randy. a card in the mailbox from ditzy mimi and her overweight cat, mitzi- you are a special 'freind' and neighbor. the santa barbarians, heasley and donnie, drove up with flowers. we barbequed and drank champagne. over hamburgers, in front of my kids, mimi asked, like always, if patrick is a good fuck. donnie fell asleep on the couch. heasley, now 22 and enlightened, chastised her sister. berries somehow managed to get everyone to sing happy birthday. it took a tornado to blow out all the candles, but i managed.

i hope i get my wish.
